Aloha Fun! How to Make and Sell Leis Wherever You Are
You don’t have to be Hawaiian or in Hawaii to celebrate with fresh flower leis.

Lei giving is a great way to honor individuals anywhere. Birthdays, graduations, dances, parties, weddings, celebrations, presentations and even an office promotion can be considered lei-worthy. They are often given to couples heading for a Pacific Island honeymoon.

Promoting leis in your business for upcoming summer events, outdoor parties, luaus and rehearsal dinners is a good way to offer a unique product that can increase seasonal business.
What are the two main techniques for making leis? Which flowers and materials can be used? For what events are leis appropriate? When should you make your own and when should you buy in bulk?

For help with the answers, I spoke with Debbi Barrett-Holt AIFD of Honolulu, who has a lifetime of lei experience including designing a lei for the president.

California Cut Flower Comission Field Notes

April 2018
A Mountain of Flowers & Fun
If the majority of Americans are unaware of where their flowers come from, it's probably safe to say they can't imagine what our farmers are willing to do to grow them. On April 7, the 2018 American Grown Field to Vase Dinner Tour kicked off at Resendiz Brother's Protea Growers in Fallbrook, California, where 154 guests were invited to experience an evening on Mel Resendiz's flower farm

This isn't your grandma's flower garden.

And it didn't disappoint...Read more >
Second Dinner Tour Stop Gets Rave Reviews
The glory of The Flower Fields never tires.

For the fourth year in a row, The Flower Fields of Carlsbad provided the American Grown Field to Vase Dinner tour with that quintessential experience that one might imagine when dreaming of dinner on a flower farm.

CamFLor Expanding Its Acerage, Flower Varieties
Carlos Cardoza has an enviable problem. He can hardly keep up with demand for the novelty flowers grown at CamFlor in Watsonville where he’s the sales manager.

Since 2012, CamFlor has been growing at a steady rate of 10 to 12 percent a year. Some months it’s closer to 30 percent.

Something had to give.

Rene van Rems Wows at First 2018 Tour Stop
You might think the job of a floral designer is singular – to surprise and delight by creating beautiful flower arrangements.
When the designer is Rene van Rems, you’d be wrong.

Van Rems was the floral designer for the recent American Grown Field to Vase Dinner at Resendiz Brothers Protea in Fallbrook, California. But his efforts went far beyond arranging flowers.

More Designers Announced!
With the first two stops on the 2018 American Grown Field to Vase Dinner Tour under our belt and another dinner just weeks away, we’re excited to announce more floral designers for our upcoming dinners!

Liezet Arnold of Bloem Decor will be designing breathtaking tablescapes at our Sacramento dinner on June 13 in the gardens of the state Capitol.

Next, Greg Campbell and Erick New of Garden District will bring their skills to our Sept. 8 dinner in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin.

Meet the American Grown Flowers Month Merchandising Contest Judges
Certified American Grown is working with farmers and retailers nationwide to create colorful in-store promotion programs that help consumers identify and appreciate homegrown blooms throughout July.

Meet our distinguished judges who will rate the in-store displays that promote American Grown Flowers Month:

Certified American Grown Flower Farm Named ‘American Small Business Champion’
Flower farmer Rita Jo Shoultz of Alaska Perfect Peony has been recognized before for her efforts to improve her industry and community. In 2014, she was a nominee for Champions of Change for the Future of Agriculture, earning her a trip to the White House. But she was still surprised by the most recent honor her Certified American Grown farm earned – being named a winner of the 2018 Small Business Championship.

May 2018
Start Now: 15 Fabulous Garden and Tropical Flower Arrangements
The hesitation is over.

Floral designers used to hesitate to mix the casual and rounded shapes of garden flowers, known as temperates for the climate where they grow, with the dramatic and angular forms of tropicals.

Today? Temps and trops together are in. Floral trendsetters are embracing this textural new mix in garden design.

And creating gorgeous designs at moderate prices at the same time.
As you look through the 15 arrangements in this week's IDEA Weekly blog, you might wonder why anyone ever paused. Because temps and trops go together like chocolate and peanut butter, bed and breakfast, movies and popcorn, beach and summer and any other magical combination that comes to your mind.

Discover how opposition, proportion and scale matter in mixed designs, the benefits of mixing flowers with different costs and how to handle different stem types in one arrangement—and see the 15 temps and trops mixed arrangements from four different designers. Just click the image above or green button below.

You can also scroll down for this week's floral design video and how to submit your designs with the chance to earn $200 in floral products and be featured in our advertising.

Have a week filled with flowers!
