September 15, 2014 Florists Review tip of the weekDesign Technique: Banding
Banding is the decorative wrapping of a stem, or a group of stems, in one or more places using raffia, ribbon, thread, wire, yarn, colored tape or other ties.
In the strictest sense, banding serves no functional purpose. It is meant to provide ornamentation, but it also may physically bind materials together. Containers also may be decoratively enhanced with banding. Here, a garland of dried pumpkins (Cucurbita) and bay leaves bands a tricolor bundle of wheat. The garland is purely decorative, providing no structural support since the wheat is tightly massed into the cylinder vase. |
