Design Technique: Layering

img2
Layering is the process of arranging leaves or other flat-surfaced materials directly on top of each other, in an overlapping manner, with little or no space in between. The materials may be layered individually or bound in bunches or stacks. This technique often produces a scale-like appearance, especially when leaves are used. Here, ornamental kale leaves are layered and assembled into a large composite rose-like flower. Composite flowers such as this can be formed by wiring each leaf or with floral adhesive.

Make Spring Special

img2
This is great to see...a design I created for the magazine!  Brings back great memories of design time at Florists Review.
Friday marks the first day of spring, a long-awaited date for many across the nation who have endured frigid winter temperatures. Whether the weather in your area is mild and warm or still snowy, customers will be itching for the sights and scents of the season that your gorgeous inventory can bring.

How about throwing an impromptu “First Day of Spring” special Friday or sometime this week when your sales need a boost? Send a quick e-mail blast to your customer list, post simple outdoor signage or share the word on your favorite social media networks. A small percentage-off incentive or special on a particular flower variety you have in abundance will encourage your customers to make more “just because” purchases to celebrate the season and adorn their homes.

Boost Your Easter Orders

img2
With just a few weeks until Easter – Sunday, April 5 – have you been in touch with your local church contacts to ensure that you can fulfill all their sanctuary flower needs for the holiday?

Whether it is stately Easter lilies or other gorgeous spring blooms, remind your contacts of the seasonal and jubilant landscape you can create for their Easter services.

Keeping a list of local clergy and church office staff is helpful in making these contacts. Throughout the year, as you work on weddings, you can continue to build this list.

Beautiful Hand Tied Fresh Spring Wreath

Hand Tied fresh spring wreath....Beautiful design Doris!!

This design of fresh foliages will dry naturally and have a life of 3-6 months.  It can be placed outdoors in a protected area or indoors for a faster drying process.  This student has plans to enhance the wreath with stick in items to change it up a bit over the next few weeks.

This is a combination of salal, seeded eucalyptus, bay leaf laurel and boxwood.  With fresh curly willow tips, all hand tied to a wire wreath frame with wax string.
