Florists Review magazine tip of the week

November 9, 2015      Florists Review magazine tip of the week

Small Business Saturday – Sign up Today

img2Small Business Saturday – on Saturday, Nov. 28 this year – is growing as a local alternative to the Black Friday tradition. Don’t miss out.

Many shops use this as a mini version of their holiday open house, to spur a bump in seasonal sales. A Small Business Saturday special of some sort will also boost sales. Crank up the holiday tunes and break out the cider and cookies.

With just two weeks to go, be sure that you’ve kept customers up to date about the festivities. Make a list of the last-minute preparations that need take place, and meet with your team to make sure everyone knows their tasks and roles for the next three weeks.

Unsure how to view the class schedule or how to sign up for a class.....email me at: flowerclassroom@gmail.com I will be glad to answer any question at: 913-708-2988 thanks! Christina Burton-Fox AIFD

Tip of the Week from Florists Review Magazine

November 2, 2015          Florists Review Magazine
Tip of the Week

Honor Local Veterans

img2Our nation pauses each Nov. 11 to honor the many men and women who have served our country.

Your local shop is in a great position to show support, whether by visiting a Veterans of Foreign Wars post or Veterans Administration hospital with arrangements to brighten the common areas, or creating a patriotic display inside the store or in the shop window.

Or you could invite veterans, many of whom are offered free meals and other services on Nov. 11, the opportunity to stop in for a few blooms or special discount.

Add your thanks to those of the nation on this annual remembrance.

Oasis Idea Weekly ~ Midollino sticks

Smithers-Oasis North America Design Director Sharon McGukin, AIFD, AAF, PFCI, is a speaker and author known for her "edutaining" floral design tips and Southern charm. She has four decades of design experience, is past president of AIFD and lives in Carrollton, Georgia.
I love experiencing the color and texture of a beautiful fall day! Seeing natural beauty outdoors often inspires us to bring that feeling indoors.

A cost effective way to add color and texture to your arrangements for fall and winter-or any season-is by incorporating natural decorative accessories. And one of my favorite natural products to use is the OASIS Midollino Sticks.
Midollinos are fun and flexible
These thin and organically dyed rattan sticks can be used in their dried form, bundled to create a strong static line or bent and curved through an arrangement, adding dramatic lines and color.
To make them even more pliable, soak your Midollino Sticks in water for 60 seconds or so. Once they're wet, you can tie these flexible sticks into knots and bend them into interesting shapes. While wet sticks might bleed a little color into the water in your vase, that just adds to the fun!
Add energy with color
Midollino Sticks
Midollino Sticks give you more than shape: available in strong pink, purple, natural, black, apple green, turquoise or red, you can subtly blend them into a design or add contrast with a bright and hearty hues.
Either way, with Midollino you can add shape, color and texture for just pennies. They come packaged in one-pound bundles of approximately 200 thin and (approximately again!) 32-inch long sticks.
Five Tips for using Midollino Sticks in a design
  • Cupid's Arrow Floral Design
Expand the space of a design by radiating lines, bundles or curves of Midollino.
  • Accent the design vase with a band, braid or knot of Midollino.
  • Double-face tape Midollino to the sides of a container for a fibrous finish.
  • Accessorize a vase by UGLUing Midollino shapes onto the sides.
  • Soak the sticks, then bend and wire them into an armature. Add flowers.
