3rd June 2016
BUYER BEWARE
Calla Crystal Blush OR Calla Crystal Clear
Word has reached us of some issues about two varieties of Calla and we have decided to draw attention to what appears to be happening.  Calla ‘Crystal Blush’ is a very special variety which has been bred to have a flexible stem so that floral designers have the ability to curve the stem without danger of breakage.  This variety is slightly more expensive because it has taken so long to develop this amazing flower.  However, we have been informed that certain growers have been selling a different variety saying that it is Calla ‘Crystal Blush’ when it’s actually Calla ‘Crystal Clear’.  Calla ‘Crystal Clear’ is a cheaper variety with a stem that is rigid.

De Haas growers have alerted us to this problem and have listed out the properties of the varieties concerned below.  Be sure that you are not being sold the wrong flower!

Crystal Blush
(Pictured Above)

The Crystal Blush variety has the following characteristics:
  • Flexible stem, easy to curve
  • In general more white than Crystal Clear
  • Pink blush appears during high temperatures
  • Heads are more oblong and often have some waves.
Crystal Clear
 (Pictured Right)

The Crystal Clear variety has the following characteristics:
  • Strong stem, curving is not possible (stem will break)
  • Less white (little bit off white) than Crystal Blush
  • No pink blush appears, 100% white
  • Heads are round
