Bring the Autumn colors indoors

Smithers-Oasis North America Design Director Sharon McGukin, AIFD, AAF, PFCI, is a speaker and author known for her "edutaining" floral design tips and Southern charm. She has four decades of design experience, is past president of AIFD and lives in Carrollton, Georgia.

Feeling chilly? Bring autumn indoors!
See this recipe and more designs
When I feel a chill in the air, it reminds me that it's time to bring the beauty of autumn indoors! We can add visual warmth to any room with the welcoming flair of fresh fall flowers.

Flowers are an element of
living well
When your family gathers around a table decorated with a centerpiece of fresh flowers, they feel like special guests. As our seasonal activities move indoors, we want to take the beauty of natural materials inside with us.

"Flowers bring about positive emotional feelings in those who enter a room," says Dr. Jeannette Haviland-Jones according to Rutgers University research. "They make the space more welcoming and create a sharing atmosphere."

10 tips for adding seasonal savvy to your autumn centerpiece.
See this recipe and more designs
  • Use flowers of the seasonsuch as mums, lilies, sunflowers, celosia or bittersweet.
  • Choose containers in autumnal colors such as bamboo, metal, glass, or pottery.
  • Incorporate pods, cones and berries gathered outdoors into your fresh flower centerpiece.
  • Add birds and feathers in with the branches, twigs, or vines of their natural habitat.
  • Gather fall leaves and pinecones to accent autumnal colored pottery or collectibles.
  • Accessorize with decorative wire to include trendy metallic accents in your fresh flower designs.
  • Group small blooming plants of varying heights and autumnal colors as a massed centerpiece.
  • Cluster pumpkins and gourds in a colorful collection of seasonal shapes and colors.
  • Fill tall, mismatched and clear vases with acorns, nuts, pods, cones, and clusters of berries to create columns of color.
  • Bind cornstalks, leaves and branches or band vases with Bind or Rustic Wire.

Step forward and share your Valentine's designs
Clearly it's fall. But this week in this week's Inspire Design Showcase on the OASIS Floral Products Facebook page, you can share your design ideas for Valentine's Day.

You can share your design and read the details here!

Every Wednesday there will be a new design theme with fifty more chances to receive a gift from us. Shared designs must include an OASIS Floral Product to qualify.

Florists Review Tip of the Week

September 14, 2015     Florists Review Magazine tip of the week

Dramatic Dried Display

img2
With the official start of fall fast approaching, customers will be clamoring for more seasonal looks.

An inexpensive piece of household furniture, a simple shoe rack easily found at a discount store, makes a wonderful fixture in the shop to display your dried materials, bundled and artfully displayed.

Many such shoe racks are expandable, allowing you to display as many preserved materials as you carry. Or, for more impact, each level can be filled with a single type of product to create a more definitive, massed look.

A large swag made from the materials and displayed above the rack can inspire consumers, sparking their creativity and showing them how dried and preserved materials can be used in their own homes.
